Introduction
I just started learning japanese and wanted to find a good way to learn hiragana. I wasn't very happy with the
various apps on the web so I decided to make my own to see if I could do better.
The basic premise is to provide a very speedy site so you can go through a lot of characters very quickly.
I recommend to start as follows:
- Select just 'Vowel group' from the Group selection.
- Select Hiragana to Romaji.
- Now, just type the romaji version of the Hiragana character that is displayed then press enter
- Repeat unti the progress box turns green, or until you're confident enough.
I found it helps to reinforce the characters to learn the Romaji-to-Hiragana direction too.
- Select Romaji to Hiragana
- You are presented with a Romaji sound and 5 Hiragana characters
- Select the Hiragana character for your answer
To progress, my advice would be to select a new 'group', and deselect all the others
while you learn the new group. Once you're confident, progressively add back the
other groups. This will test your ability to make sure you don't confuse the
new characters with the old ones.
My goal is to make this the best Hiragana learning tool ever! I have several ideas for improvement:
- App should learn which characters are causing trouble.
- App should save status between visits
- Add basic words made up of the characters in that group
- Time how long it takes to learn characters. (It would be good to know how long it takes an average person to learn hiragana..)
- Introduce new characters at an appropriate rate
- Add Katakana
Known issues:
- Doesnt work very well on mobile
Thanks, Steve Parkinson
Update:
Added Katakana, finally!
Looking at my statistics, .. the average using used this site for just 1 minute!
Wow, you guys learn kana fast, (or I suck, or you suck).
